The Crisis of Antisemitism on College Campuses

The Crisis of Antisemitism on College Campuses

College and university campuses have long been known to be centerpoints of civil rights and social justice movements. So why is it that they are known to be sources of some of the most frequent and severe antisemitism?

Tailored specifically for university counseling centers, participants learn about how antisemitism can manifest on their campus and what they can do about it. We’ll explore the differences between protesting and antisemitism, unique vulnerability factors that Jewish students experience, and how to cultivate a counseling center culture in which every single student can feel safe and welcomed.

Make a Difference – Share It!

A must for counseling center staff. Before this training, I felt so overwhelmed and unprepared to handle these issues on my campus. I learned so much and can’t wait to start implementing some of the things discussed.

H., LCSW

This presentation should be part of every college counseling center’s ongoing training and commitment to multiculturalism! Dr. Levanda is informed, knowledgeable, and the material was balanced and evidence-based. College counseling needs to become more informed and aware of the prevalence of antisemitism on college campuses including how it fits into the geopolitical context at large. Dr. Levanda helped us understand not only how to clinically support our Jewish students facing antisemitism but also how to support our greater campus community including differentiating between activism and antisemitism. We are grateful to Dr. Levanda to share her expertise to our counseling staff and supporting our knowledge base and cultural competency.

A., PsyD, Clinical Director

Dr. Levanda is an exceptional presenter. She successfully kept our entire staff engaged during a three-hour virtual webinar—no small feat, especially in the afternoon. Her presentation resonated deeply with everyone. Dr. Levanda masterfully combined facts, definitions, and statistics about antisemitism with thought-provoking questions, meaningful discussions, and opportunities for reflection. She seamlessly connected historical events with contemporary issues and tied domestic situations to international contexts. This was our first training focused specifically on antisemitism, and I am truly grateful that Dr. Levanda was the one to lead it.

M., PhD, Director

Robust and Informative! This training was not only an eye-opener about how to address antisemitism clinically, but also about how to respond to campus constituencies who might question the relevancy of learning about antisemitism. Given the current sociopolitical context, it is imperative that higher education settings learn more about how to discern antisemitism from activism and learn how to help students build a healthy sense of living in a diverse university community. This training is framed by research, historical and contemporary data, and provides a good platform to illuminate where higher education professionals can ask themselves questions about how to best support this often invisible minority population.  Dr. Levanda easily engages her audience, can answer a plethora of questions related to the Jewish population, and can help your staff be savvier about teasing apart and/or merging current world and national events with students’ current ethno-cultural personal identities and lived experiences. You’ll leave this training feeling more ready to support students in their myriads of challenges related to feeling a sense of belonging to an ever-challenging world.

M., PhD, International Student Services Coordinator

Dr. Levanda presented to our university counseling center on the crisis of antisemitism on college campuses. Her presentation was outstanding in every way. Dr. Levanda provided clear, well-researched information about the current climate of antisemitism facing Jewish students on college campuses, as well as historical information about antisemitism that many people may not know. I am Jewish, and though I consider myself to know a fair amount about antisemitism, I honestly took away new information from this presentation, especially in how I might engage in dialogue on this topic in the future. Dr. Levanda did not shy away from answering questions other attendees posed, and modeled a safe, empathetic way to actually have dialogue about sensitive current events that people all too often shy away from. She took great care to respect everyone’s point of view, embodying the idea of “there are no dumb questions,” and through these interactions you can see the highly skilled therapist and educator that she is. I can’t recommend this training enough to those working on college campuses and beyond. I am grateful for the opportunity to have had Dr. Levanda come to our campus and share her expertise with us.
